What is happening in the Taiwan Strait?
Taiwan Strait tensions: PLA drills, grey-zone moves, US arms sales, key actors, a sourced timeline, what to watch, and monthly conflict events and fatalities.
This tracker reports the latest available monthly humanitarian conflict summary for Taiwan. It is a country-level pulse, not a comprehensive incident ledger, a measure of the Chinese military pressure recorded in Taiwan's daily aircraft and ship counts, or a forecast.

Background
The dispute dates to China's civil war. In 1949 Mao Zedong's Communists took control of the mainland and Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalists retreated to Taiwan, where the Republic of China is still the island's formal name. The People's Republic has never governed Taiwan, yet it claims the island and has never renounced the use of force to take it. Beijing says relations can only proceed under a One China framework, and the two sides read the 1992 Consensus differently. The United States recognised Beijing in 1979 but keeps unofficial ties and sells arms to Taiwan under the Taiwan Relations Act, while only acknowledging China's position. There is no fighting between China and Taiwan; the strain shows up as military pressure. Three days after Lai Ching-te became president on 20 May 2024, the People's Liberation Army began Joint Sword-2024A around the island. During Joint Sword-2024B that October, Taiwan reported a record 153 Chinese aircraft in a single day, according to ASPI. Strait Thunder-2025A in April 2025 rehearsed blockades and strikes on ports and energy sites. In February 2025 a freighter with a Chinese captain severed a cable to Penghu, and a Taiwanese court jailed him for three years. Justice Mission 2025, in late December, followed a record $11.1bn US arms package. Sources: pressurepoints.aspi.org.au, taipeitimes.com (1, 2), NBC News.
As of early November 2026 there is no war in the Taiwan Strait, but China keeps up daily military and coast guard pressure. Taiwan's defence ministry counted 21 Chinese military aircraft and seven navy ships around the island in the 24 hours to 10 October 2026. ISW and AEI counted 159 air defence zone incursions in September, less than half the 2024 and 2025 levels, and four China Coast Guard incursions into Kinmen's restricted waters in October. China has held no full war games near Taiwan since late December 2025. A US arms package worth about $14bn remains stalled, and Taiwan elects mayors at the end of November. Country readings
Taiwan has a Country Instability Index reading of 21 (Low). Instability is a live 0-100 stress score; resilience is a structural 0-100 index ranked across countries. Both describe each country as a whole, not this crisis alone, and a country without a reading reflects index coverage, not a statement about risk.
| Country | Instability (CII) | CII movement | Resilience score | Resilience rank |

How to read this tracker
Use these monthly country summaries as a bounded pulse, then inspect the dashboard for event-level context, map layers, and other independent signals. The figures are not forecasts and should not be interpreted as a complete casualty or incident ledger. World Monitor's forecasts are graded separately, and that record is published on the forecast accuracy scorecard.
